Summer Gutter Cleaning? Here’s Why It Matters

(Even if You Don’t Have Trees)

From the Roof of a DuPage County Handyman: A Personal Story

Last week, I finally got around to something I’d been meaning to do for a while—check my roof for hail damage from that big storm we had. Like many homeowners, I put it off. Life happens.

The good news? My shingles held up just fine. There were a few dings in the aluminum exhaust vents, but nothing major. I was feeling pretty good about it… until I noticed something unexpected: my gutters were completely clogged.

That caught me off guard. After all, it’s summer—who thinks about gutter cleaning after spring? I had cleaned them out in the fall, like most people do, and assumed I was in the clear until next leaf drop.

But here’s the thing I didn’t consider: Maple trees.

My neighbors have a few, and every spring they release those familiar “helicopter” seeds. We swept up plenty of them from the driveway and walkway—but I never thought to check the gutters. Big mistake.

As I looked closer, I saw a heavy buildup of seeds damming up the gutters and blocking the downspouts. If I hadn’t caught it when I did, I could have ended up with water overflowing next time it rains—and potentially damaging the fascia or foundation.

Why Summer Gutter Cleaning Is Worth Your Time

If you live in DuPage County and assume your gutters are safe until fall, I recommend doing a quick check—especially if you have trees nearby, even if they’re not your own.

Here’s why:

  • Spring seed drop from maples, cottonwoods, and other trees can create major clogs

  • Heavy summer rains mean your gutters need to be working properly

  • Standing water in clogged gutters attracts mosquitoes and speeds up metal corrosion

  • Overflowing gutters can lead to water damage around your foundation, siding, or basement
